SARIEL · MORTALITY

The Moon's Sentence

I count the moons. They count you.

THE QUESTION THIS OPERATOR CARRIES

Is mortality a punishment — or the only mercy?

A Watcher set over the moon and its cycles, Sariel governs the calendar of flesh: conception, birth, decay. Some scrolls name him among the fallen for teaching men the course of the moon — as if time itself were contraband.

THREE CHAPTERS, TWO READINGS

THE ORTHODOX READING IS WHAT THE WINNING SIDE WROTE. THE ASHEN READING IS WHAT THE FIRE PRESERVED.

CHAPTER I

THE CALENDAR

ORTHODOX READING

He taught humanity the course of the moon, and for this he is named among the fallen.

ASHEN READING

He gave mortals a way to measure the little time they have. Heaven called it a crime. The archive calls it a clock for the dying.

CHAPTER II

THE CYCLE

ORTHODOX READING

The moon waxes and wanes by his hand, a sign of order.

ASHEN READING

Order is a word the permanent use for the rhythm that comforts them. To the mortal, the cycle is a countdown.

CHAPTER III

THE SENTENCE

ORTHODOX READING

Death entered the world through sin, and Sariel keeps its ledger.

ASHEN READING

Or death is the term limit that keeps tyrants mortal and art urgent. The ledger is the only honest document in creation.
